For eXtyles customers who use the Auto-Redact feature, text that falls within double quotation marks has always been “protected” during this process, so that Auto-Redact rules will not make changes to direct quotes. Similar protection of text that falls within single quotation marks presents more of a challenge, since single quotes can be difficult for eXtyles to distinguish from apostrophes.

Inera has recently created rules to apply protection to quoted text in single quotes during Auto-Redact. These rules are not foolproof – for instance, in some cases when a quotation ends with the letter “s” and the surrounding text and formatting are ambiguous, it is difficult for eXtyles to distinguish a quotation from a plural possessive. However, the rules will successfully protect single-quoted material in the vast majority of cases.
