Word Experiences an Error Trying to Open a File

If Word refuses to open a document, one of the following techniques can often help you recover the file:

(1) Word (XP and later) can often repair problematic or corrupted files. If you are having difficulty activating a file, try the following steps:

• From the Word File menu, select Open.

• When you have located the file, click the down arrow on the Open button and select Open and Repair.

• If Word has found and repaired errors in the file, it will provide a list of them; close out of the dialog and save the file to make the repairs permanent.

• Activate the file with eXtyles.

(2) Try to open the document in a different version of Word (e.g., 2000 vs. 2003 or vice versa).

(3) Try to open the document in Wordpad (it can read most DOC files, though not with 100% fidelity).

(4) Run the document through a program like Conversions Plus.

If all else fails, contact the author and have them send a fresh copy of the file.
